4 Safety Tips for Long Winter Drives

1. Check Your Tires

In cold weather, tire pressure tends to drop. Before leaving on your journey, check that each tire is inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendation. You can find the correct tire pressure by checking the owner’s manual or the label that is inside the driver’s door frame. Be sure to also examine the tires for signs of damage or wear and tear like punctures, bumps, or cracks. 

2. Use De-icing Washer Fluid

Odds are high that you’ll be driving through some snow, especially if you’re traveling north. Fill up the windshield washer reservoir with de-icing washing fluid and keep an extra container in your trunk. This fluid is amazing for clearing the windshield when it’s frosting over and the defrost isn’t working fast enough. 

3. Fill the Tank

Whether you have a gas-powered car, electric car, or hybrid, be sure it’s completely fueled or powered up before leaving for your destination. The batteries of electric and hybrid vehicles will drain faster in cold temperatures. Maximize your battery use by plugging your vehicle in overnight during the winter months. 

4. Stock up on Supplies

Another essential part of being ready for any long winter drives is carrying emergency supplies in your vehicle at all times, such as these:

• Snow shovel and ice scraper
• Sand or cat litter
• Blankets, gloves, hats, and boots
• Cell phone and charger
• Bottled water and shelf-stable snacks
